Spoon carving is one of very few craft skills which can be traced historically through virtually all civilisations across the world. There is evidence of spoons carved out of mammoth ivory from 20,000 years ago. Wooden spoons have been discovered dating back 3000 to 4000 years. Romans used both wooden and metal spoons, and wooden spoons were used by Anglo Saxons and Vikings. There is still a well-respected tradition of wooden spoon carving in Scandinavia to this day. In Cyprus there is a long established tradition of wood carving which includes furniture, religious art and practical domestic items such as spoons.
Through our wooden spoon carving workshops we aim to keep that tradition alive and current. We hope that all those who take part in our workshop will have the opportunity to experience practicing a traditional craft using, as far as is possible, traditional tools and will leave with a greater understanding of the skills involved in this ancient craft.
You will start the workshop by selecting a piece of ‘raw wood’ and end with a personalised spoon, created by you, which reflects your design based on the grain and patterns in your piece of wood.

At the start of the workshop you will be able to select from a range of different woods one which you want to use to create your spoon. All the woods are sustainably sourced from local trees, are none-toxic and include walnut, olive, citrus, strawberry wood, and carob. You can choose to use one of a number of templates based on traditional styles for your design or follow your own inspiration based on the grain and patterns in your chosen wood. During the workshop you will learn to use traditional wood carving tools, a carving axe, sloyd knife, hook or spoon knife, gouge, burnishing stone or deer antler. Food safe woods and oils will also be explained to enable you to protect your finished spoon.
Throughout the workshop Tony will give individual advice on how to work successfully with the grain of the wood and how to incorporate knots and flaws into your design.
At the end of the workshop you will have your own, personal hand crafted spoon to take home and treasure.

Relief wood carving is a technique where figures, patterns, or images are carved into a flat wooden panel, making them appear raised or three-dimensional against a lowered background. It acts as a 3D picture, using depth and shadows to create texture, commonly used for decorative plaques, landscapes, and signs.

Solitary bees are nothing short of extraordinary! Imagine—a dazzling array of 200 unique species, each living independently without colonies, queens, or honey production like their honeybee and bumblebee cousins. Their daily mission? To pollinate flowers and quite literally keep our world alive. It’s awe-inspiring to realize that only the females take on the monumental tasks of building nests and gathering pollen and nectar, while males exist solely to ensure the next generation.
These gentle marvels are remarkably non-aggressive, with stings so mild—or even absent—that they pose no threat at all. How incredible is it that such delicate beings play such a vital role in maintaining the beauty around us?
From every corner of humanity—single-parent families to bustling multi-generational homes—let’s join together in heartfelt gratitude for these tiny guardians. Let’s honor them by building welcoming bee hotels or safe havens, especially as their natural shelters like old trees and hollow stems vanish amidst new construction. What an amazing way to give back to those who quietly sustain our world!

The first use of man-made birdhouses in history was around the 15th - 16th century. In Eastern Europe, birdhouses were built for sparrows and swallows during the pre-Ottoman period. They were made of bricks, tiles, wood, stone and mortar.there is a long established.
Unfortunately, in the bird world, there aren't always enough holes to go around. That's where birdhouses (also known as nest boxes) come in. They provide valuable homes for many birds and wonderful viewing opportunities for birdwatchers.
The workshop is an ideal family outing. We encourage Family participation and is suitable for families with children from 7 years old.
