Spoon carving is one of very few craft skills which can be traced historically through virtually all civilisations across the world. There is evidence of spoons carved out of mammoth ivory from 20,000 years ago. Wooden spoons have been discovered dating back 3000 to 4000 years. Romans used both wooden and metal spoons, and wooden spoons were used by Anglo Saxons and Vikings. There is still a well-respected tradition of wooden spoon carving in Scandinavia to this day. In Cyprus there is a long established tradition of wood carving which includes furniture, religious art and practical domestic items such as spoons.
Through our wooden spoon carving workshops we aim to keep that tradition alive and current. We hope that all those who take part in our workshop will have the opportunity to experience practicing a traditional craft using, as far as is possible, traditional tools and will leave with a greater understanding of the skills involved in this ancient craft.
You will start the workshop by selecting a piece of ‘raw wood’ and end with a personalised spoon, created by you, which reflects your design based on the grain and patterns in your piece of wood.
Your workshop will be led by Tony Holdich, who lives in a local village in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains. Tony carves wooden spoons as well as other practical and decorative items. Tony also builds traditional wooden long bows and makes arrows. He also works in stained glass including making stained glass windows.
At the start of the workshop you will be able to select from a range of different woods one which you want to use to create your spoon. All the woods are sustainably sourced from local trees, are none-toxic and include walnut, olive, citrus, strawberry wood, and carob. At the start of the workshop you will be able to select from a range of different woods one which you want to use to create your spoon. All the woods are sustainably sourced from local trees, are none-toxic and include walnut, olive, citrus, strawberry wood, and carob. You can choose to use one of a number of templates based on traditional styles for your design or follow your own inspiration based on the grain and patterns in your chosen wood. During the workshop you will learn to use traditional wood carving tools, a carving axe, sloyd knife, hook or spoon knife, gouge, burnishing stone or deer antler. Food safe woods and oils will also be explained to enable you to protect your finished spoon.
Throughout the workshop Tony will give individual advice on how to work successfully with the grain of the wood and how to incorporate knots and flaws into your design.
At the end of the workshop you will have your own, personal hand crafted spoon to take home and treasure.
